The University of Bedfordshire’s community radio station Radio LaB is in the running for a prize in the Student Radio Association’s I Love Student Radio Awards.

Two of Radio LaB’s community projects, the Vesper House Lunch Club and a drug driving awareness campaign, have been shortlisted in the Best Outreach Project category.

The Vesper House Lunch Club saw Radio LaB’s student managers Kayleigh Saunders, Matt Udall and Steve Wells, work with Age Concern Luton to interview elderly guests of the Vesper House Lunch Club about the songs that evoke happy memories for them.

Matt said: “Working on these projects were rewarding enough, but its extra special to be shortlisted twice for an award. I am looking forward to hopefully attend my first awards ceremony in just a few weeks.”

Steve said: “I am delighted that Radio LaB has been nominated for these awards as we have enjoyed working on the projects very much. This kind of recognition will be a huge boost to my CV and LinkedIn profile, aiding my search for employment in the radio industry, so for that I am personally very grateful.”

Kayleigh said: “I am thankful for the opportunity to have been a part of these projects. We didn’t do it to be nominated for awards, but I am delighted we’ve been recognised in this way.”

The students also worked with Luton Borough Council and Smart Safe Luton to produce an advert to make people aware of the dangers of driving while under the influence of drugs.

Radio LaB’s Coordinator Terry Lee said: “We are proud to have worked alongside Age Concern Luton, Luton Borough Council and Smart Safe Luton as part of our radio output this year. Our students learnt so much from these community projects and the feedback from those organisations was fantastic. Radio LaB will continue to be a creative platform for students to work with positive and charitable external organisations and I would encourage anyone who thinks we may be able to help to contact us.”

The winners will be announced at the National Student Radio Conference in Leicester on 20 April.
