Students from the University of Bedfordshire’s School of Media & Performance and School of Culture & Communications came together to find out exactly what it takes to deliver a live TV show.

Students studying Media Performance, TV Production, Broadcast TV & Radio, Film & TV and Media Make up students worked together to produce the live interviews, which featured actor and model Pablo Maza and Capital FM presenter Joe Flemons.

Media Performance student Reece Hawkins, said: “The whole process was something I have never done before. It gave me an insight into the amount of work and dedication that is needed to perform to a professional standard for a live interview. Now I have done it, I can take great confidence in knowing what is expected of myself for similar situations in the future.”

TV Production student Danielle Betteridge said: “It was an amazing practical experience and really helped me to develop my confidence and my skills. The live show helped me to understand what a job in the TV industry could be like and I feel like we all worked brilliantly in a team.”

The live shows are part of the assessment process, giving tutors a chance to see how their students are doing.

Senior Lecturer in Media Performance Dr Maria Wiener said: “The live interviews form an invaluable experience for our students, since they are mirroring standard industry practice. The students develop a deeper understanding of the work that is required to make this happen and acknowledge the work of all the other students, outside their course, who equally contribute to this live event.”

Course Coordinator in TV Production Kathryn Wolfe said: “This is realistic learning at its best – with real time pressures and real guests being interviewed. Only three months ago the TV students were Freshers new to the TV studio environment. By early January they are working as a multi skilled team, confident in all the technical and production roles required to create this multi camera live transmission. A huge amount of learning has taken place in a short amount of time, and I am very proud of all the students.”
