Sports students at the University of Bedfordshire have been given a helping hand thanks to a sports scholarship.

A total of 16 students were awarded sport scholarships this year, with five students receiving the Platinum Performance Scholarship, designed to support the students’ development in their chosen sport, as well as supporting university sport. The students compete across sports ranging from triathlon and trampolining to table tennis and hurdling.

The students who were awarded the Scholarships are:

  • Amy Woodroof
  • Emily Bolton
  • Jessica Hunter
  • Lewis Burgess
  • Luke Dewe

The Scholarship includes membership to the University’s gyms and Strength & Conditioning Unit, initial screening and physiological and biomechanical assessment and £1,000 to put towards equipment, kit and travel expenses.

BA Sport and Physical Education student, Emily, who plays table tennis for Great Britain, said: “Being awarded a sports scholarship has enabled me to access strength and conditioning at the University, which is a great help to my performance and the money I receive I can put towards competing on the International circuit to better my world ranking.”

Clinical Exercise Therapy student, Luke, who specialises in trampolining, said:  “The scholarship has allowed me to feel a bigger part of the sporting community and has made me feel better about myself.”

Head of Sports Partnerships at the University of Bedfordshire, Stephen Pitt, said: “It is great for the University to be able to honour our sporting scholars and support them through the academic year.  By showcasing these scholars I hope we can continue to encourage others to aspire to sporting success and in turn support more students through their sporting journey whilst at the University.”
