This week, second year students from the School of Media and Performance got the chance to execute their television skill set by interviewing a selection of special guests at the University of Bedfordshire’s TV studio, housed on the Luton campus.

This annual course assessment for ‘performance in context’ was live-streamed across Beds TV’s YouTube channel and on Facebook. Students were teamed up and tasked with identifying a guest they would be interested in interviewing. Once the guest was on board, the students then had to create an interview structure, research discussion points and gather content to form a ten minute chat-show style segment.

Dr Maria Wiener, Senior Lecturer in Media Performance said: “This part of the course is invaluable and allows our students to practise and explore their media performance skills in a relaxed atmosphere, whilst getting to do so in the presence of their chosen guest. Each year we always get an interesting variety of VIPs who agree to take part and this year has been no exception. The guests are always impressed with our students’ professionalism and the facilities we have on site which we humbly take pride in.”

So what did this year’s guests think?

Sam Darlaston

“I think days like today are really important for students on the media performance course as it really hones in their skills. You can see the different interview styles, techniques and influences each individual has and it’s important for them to be able to express that in front of the camera as it gets them prepared for their future career in the media industry. It’s also great that they have access to speak with guests with careers in which they can aspire to.”

Gareth Brierley

“I think it’s such a unique, interesting course as it covers such a wide range of elements from presenting to directing to researching and it even covers an element of acting for television. And for students to be given the opportunity to interview a guest in front of a live audience with a full television crew and numerable cameras is excellent and something I’ve never seen before at other similar courses.”

Radu Isac

“I was so honoured to be asked along to this event – it’s nice to be back in the buzzing university atmosphere and I’m really impressed with the professional way this course is run. As a comic on TV you don’t always get to see what goes on around you during filming, so it’s interesting to see the ins-and-outs of the operation.”

Ezinne Asinugo

“This is probably the most exciting thing I’ve ever seen – I think all universities should have this platform for students seeking a career in the creative industry. I don’t think students often get this type of experience elsewhere and this course at Bedfordshire gives students essential work experience whilst studying, so I really commend the University for having this television training available. There’s so much to learn here – ten out of ten!”
