A University of Bedfordshire Psychology alumni has recounted her journey through Clearing, which saw her move from lower than expected A Level results to her dream job as an Employment Coach.

‘Defy Expectations’ is the focus of the University’s Clearing campaign, reassuring those looking for a place in Higher Education that they can achieve anything they wish to.

Clearing 2021Danelle originally thought that Clearing was a negative way to apply. She said: “I initially believed applying through Clearing and not transitioning directly into my chosen university was a failure in some-way – this couldn't be further from the truth!”

She added: “Applying to university through Clearing does not in any way speak negatively on your ability to succeed and excel throughout the remainder of your studies. Your start to university may look different than intended but I'd encourage you to be open and embrace this.”

Following this year’s A Level results day (10th of August), the University’s Clearing team is on hand for all those whose plans may have changed. Read Danelle’s story to see how Clearing provided her with a platform to showcase what she is truly capable of, and how it helped propel her to a fulfilling career path, working with young adults…

My name is Danelle Cuffie, I am 24 and from Edmonton in London. I graduated in 2018 from a BSc Psychology course.

I initially reluctantly applied to university through Clearing because I did not achieve the grades needed for my confirmed university offers. I say reluctantly because, I never imagined I would need to consider Clearing but, my plans ultimately changed when I met my match – A Levels! I initially believed applying through Clearing and not transitioning directly into my chosen university as others, was a failure in some-way and, something that may have proven to be a disadvantage to me moving into my degree - this couldn't be further from the truth.

The Clearing process with the University of Bedfordshire was quite straightforward. The process began when I received an automated email from UCAS stating "Bedfordshire has a place for you" – and so I called the University's Clearing hotline where the adviser was warm, friendly and understanding. I was asked to confirm my GCSE grades and within 24 hours I had received an email to confirm my place on my desired course.

To anyone considering the Clearing process I would say go for it! Remember, applying to university through Clearing does not in any way speak negatively on your ability to succeed and excel throughout the remainder of your studies. Your start to university may look different than intended but I'd encourage you to be open and embrace this, your unique journey.

Despite a relatively rough start, university has been a beautiful, transformational experience. I also worked to graduate with a First-Class Degree alongside other sports and faculty awards and was ultimately awarded a ‘Highest Undergraduate Achievement Award’ at my graduation ceremony. These are major achievements to me especially considering my unexpected start and, I say this to emphasise that Clearing, especially where you are left disappointed on results day, does not limit what you can achieve! University panned out to be an even more incredible journey than I could have ever imagined, I am glad I chose Clearing – or did Clearing chose me? I'm yet to figure this out.

I was certain I wanted to study Psychology and so I particularly loved that during my Clearing process with Beds, I never felt pressured to settle for an alternative subject area. I have always loved education and seeing my father attend university as a mature student was also an inspiration to me applying for university.

I discovered my dream job during the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic forced me to pause, prioritise and revaluate my next steps and from this, I became more intentional with my approach to post-graduate life instead of grasping at whatever opportunities presented themselves. I am now even considering a return for postgraduate study.

Now, almost 3 years since graduating, I love serving within my local church and wider community as a Youth Leader and have transitioned through a series of roles from Higher Education Widening Participation projects to volunteering, and working with organisations such as the mental health charity, Mind. Now in my dream role, I serve as an Employment Coach where I love supporting young adults into discovering and reaching their potential and, amazingly, I am finally putting my Psychology degree to good use!

More recently I have also enjoyed developing my love for public speaking by sharing my journey with current and prospective students. I believe the world is still my oyster so... I wonder what's next!
