First Year Business Management student Rajwinder Singh shares how he plans to celebrate Diwali and what traditions people can do to get involved.

Diwali is an important religious festival originating in India. Diwali takes place annually and lasts for five days, marking the start of the Hindu New Year. The exact dates change each year and are determined by the position of the moon – this year, Diwali falls on Sunday 12 November 2023.

For many people, Diwali honours the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The lights and lamps are said to help Lakshmi find her way into peoples’ homes, bringing prosperity in the coming year.

What does Diwali mean to you?

A big part of Diwali is about spending with family, buying sweets, worshipping the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, burning fireworks at night, decorating the house and spreading happiness.

How is Diwali celebrated around the world?

Diwali is celebrated for two days. Day one is about bringing good fortune. Typically, people clean their homes and shop for gold or kitchen utensils. Day two is about worship. People decorate their homes with clay lamps and create design patterns called rangoli on the floor using coloured powders or sand.

How will you be celebrating?

This year, I will be going to a temple in London and will buy sweets for close family and friends. I am also trying to be sustainable and have decided not to light fireworks.

How can people show their support and get involved during the celebration?

In our culture, alcohol is generally discouraged, so people can show their support by limiting or cutting out alcohol consumption. People can also get involved in charity work or give back to people in need.

The festival is a great opportunity to spend time with others. People can dance, worship, cook or exchange gifts together. There are some great food recipes that people can make during the celebration.
