BISC research Seminar by Professor Yung-Ming Li from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan

The Business and Information Systems Research Centre (BISC) welcomed Professor Yung-Ming Li (Institute of Information Management, National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan) on 9th July 2018 . Professor Li delivered a fascinating presentation entitled “A Collective Intelligence Mechanism on Portfolio Recommendation for Investment Clubs”.

With global trend of negative interest rate, more people invest financial products by themselves rather than deposit saving in the banks. It is likely more profitable to follow with financial experts in the investment clubs as they have more knowledge on how to select stock and get greater positive interest rate. But many of investment clubs have low return of rate since financial crisis in 2007-2008. Professor Li’s research team aims to propose a recommendation mechanism that combine collective intelligence and machine learning technique (LSTM recurrent neural network) to generate portfolio in accord with the collective demand of an investment club. Depending on club's risk tolerance and investment style, the proposed system can recommend appropriate stock portfolio for the investors in the same club. Utilizing StockTwits social platform and stock historical data, the team proves that the proposed portfolio recommendation mechanism performs better than other benchmark approaches in market.
