Adam Higgin, Head of Environmental Sustainability, said: "The University's Environment Policy makes a firm commitment to promote and encourage the use of sustainable forms of transport by its students and staff.

"The Cycle-2-Work Scheme is just one element of a wider sustainable transport strategy that aims to reduce the environmental impacts of travel.

"Video conferencing facilities, Cycle-2-Work Scheme, Car-Share, Shuttle busses, electric car charging and electric vehicles are all University of Bedfordshire initiatives designed to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution and runway climate change."

Those signed up include Professor Ravi Kohli, Web Editor Elisabeth Coughlin and International Marketing Manager Lee Allen.

"Taking part in the Scheme has given me two key advantages that I would not have had before," said Lee, who lives around three miles away from the Luton campus.

"One I am now saving on fuel costs in my car. And two, more importantly for me, I now incorporate my cycling into my fitness programme riding to, and from, work which has helped me increase my training. The ride into work is a great way to set myself up for the day.

"Had the University not started this programme I admit I would have stuck with the status quo of driving to work and going to the gym from there."

Professor Kohli purchased a folding bike to commute around London and into the University. "My new Brompton is a brilliant British designed and built bike. It folds up easily, and the ride is great. I think the Cycle to Work scheme is an excellent incentive to get fit and get around."

Elisabeth Coughlin is also very happy with her bike (photo above), a Claud Butler traditional ladies bike. "I use it every day, seven days a week for work and shopping. It is quite sturdy so I can carry a lot of shopping on it and transport produce home from my allotment."
