Sports Awards 2024 is Coming!!

The Annual University Sports Awards has become an important date in the Sports diary. The evening provides an excellent opportunity to celebrate the commitment, hard work, dedication and sporting success of individuals and teams throughout the University of Bedfordshire.

Comprising of a two-course meal and the presentation of several awards, including the well-anticipated club of the year, this night is always one our teams look forward to attending.

Nominations close on Thursday 7th March.

Here is a list of sports awards for the evening. These awards are nominated by Staff and Students with the winners being chosen by an independent panel (where applicable).

Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Commitment to Sport - This award recognises the outstanding achievement of an individual who has shown encouragement to others to progress in sport or who has contributed significantly to a sport by being the most giving, well organised or best individual. It is awarded to one student across the whole University. This is to be awarded to the student showing the most commitment, drive, hard work and enthusiasm for the sport, particularly when benefiting other students and staff.

Club of the Year - This is open to all competitive sports clubs, whether they compete in BUCS competitions or not. The award will be based on the club’s activity throughout the academic year and what they have contributed to the University's Competitive Sports programme. This might be through club growth or development, outreach, success on the pitch and/or other activities off the pitch.

Team of the Year - This is for any University competitive sports team that has had success in their league/competition in the season. This will be judged on but is not limited to, performance, participation, attitude and commitment. This award is also open to those who compete in BUCS Nationals and is not based on BUCS points scored.

Community Club of the Year - This is awarded to the club that has not only worked hard on the field but worked hard on it too. This club may have spent the year raising money for their chosen charity/charities, developing links and working with the local community, and has shown a willingness to give back to the University by helping to create a positive, inclusive student experience

Most Improved Team - This is awarded to the team that has improved in the following areas: recruitment, competitive excellence in BUCS or national competitions, discipline and event planning.

Committee Member of the Year - This award will be given to a committee member who has displayed an outstanding level of dedication, passion and success over the last year. Additional contributions to their team and the wider community will also be taken into consideration.

Newcomer of the Year - This award is given to the person who joined the team this year and who has shown noticeable talent within the club or team. This can either be based on a good level of sports achievement and representation for the club or improvement in skill shown throughout the year.

Sports Personality of the Year - This award is given to an individual who has been the heart and soul of competitive and recreational sports this year. This person has shown great dedication and a positive attitude throughout their time as a sports member. They are renowned for their enthusiasm, are well-liked by their peers and staff, and have a permanent positive impact on the club and the wider student community.

Coach of the Year - This award may be presented to any paid coach of a club who has made a real difference to your club members’ performance and/or experience of sport this year.


These 2 awards are voted for by the members of each team and the team's coach and are handed out on the night as well.

Esports Team of the Year - The Esports Team of the Year honours a team that has had an incredible year in terms of results, popularity and skill level.

Esports Player of the Year - The Esports Player of the year honours someone who has contributed to the University’s Esports programme in a large way over the last year. This could be by driving forward the awareness of the programme to perform in competitions whether in a team or individually.


All winners MUST be nominated by using the correct form.

This form will allow all students and staff to nominate which person and/or team they believe deserves to win. This is also where you should vote for who you want to win each team award.

Before nominating, please read through the Nomination Guide very carefully. This will give a clear outline of what to include in your nomination, who is on the judging panel and other important information.

To attend this celebratory evening, you must purchase a ticket.

Tickets are FREE for sports members and can be purchased by clicking the link below. This includes entry to the event, a 2-course meal, travel from Luton (where applicable) and the awards for your teams.

  • Tickets are on sale to Competitive Now.
  • As of 16th March, tickets will go on general sale.
  • Tickets are limited so make sure you get yours fast.
