Return to Study FAQs
Yes, you do need to let the university know that you intend to return from your studies however we will contact you around 3 months prior to your return to studies date to initiate the return to studies process
If you do not confirm your intention to return by your expected return date, you could be exited from your course. For further information, please read our withdrawal and termination policy [PDF]
When you can return from suspension depends upon how long you have been suspended for, what type of study and assessments you have missed and any attendance requirements. We will review your student profile and confirm whether you can return during the same study period or at the start of the next study period.
For example:
- If you have been suspended due to a financial reason but resolved this within a short period (e.g. within 1-2 week) then you might be able to return with the same study period.
- If you have been suspended due to financial reasons and do not resolve this for an extended period (e.g. 1-2 months) then you are unlikely to be able to return to your studies during the same period and must therefore return to your studies at the start of the next study period.
If you have been suspended from your studies (except due to availability of units or postgraduate supervisor) and have not resolved your suspension, then you will be exited from the university via our withdrawal and termination policy [PDF]
If you completed assessments prior to your break then you might have resits to take, and this might or might not prevent you from progressing depending on the amount of failure and length of your break. Your progression will always be determined in accordance with our academic regulations
If you are required to take resits then you need to have completed these resits and met progressions conditions for you course in order to continue on your next period of study.
If you are studying on a visa and have had a break in your studies then you should contact the International Office to understand the implications of your break on your visa/immigration status
Your return to studies will be dependant on the conditions of your appeal however you will usually be expected to return at start of the next available opportunity.
To support you with your studies, you will usually (depending on the length of your break) be required to agree a return to study plan with your course leader.
If you would like to return to your studies earlier then planned then you should first speak to your course leader. If your interruption was due to health or wellbeing reasons then you would be required to demonstrate that you are fit to return to your studies. The Student Engagement Team can provide advice and guidance on this. You should also speak to your course leader, supervisor and/or employer (if appropriate).
In most situations, the time that you are on a study break (both interruption and suspensions) will count towards the time you are permitted to take in order to complete your studies. All courses have a maximum period of registration and its important to ensure that you are aware of this. You can find more information in our regulations – Section 3b: Registrations
If you cannot return to your studies on the agreed date then it might be possible to extend your interruption. Please see our interruptions webpage for more information.
