Siobhan Busby loved watching crime dramas and had dreams of becoming a crime investigation officer, but didn’t think she had the grades to pursue it.

Despite this, Siobhan was offered a place on the University of Bedfordshire’s Forensic Science course through Clearing, and has thrived ever since.

“I have been able to get real lab experience while studying, as well as take part in hands-on activities like the simulated crime scene at the Putteridge Bury campus. I have been able to get real experience of what it is really like working in the field,” said Siobhan, 21, from Luton.

It wasn’t until Siobhan began studying at the University that she discovered she had dyslexia, and her lecturers were quick to put support in place.

“I have a dedicated dyslexic tutor who I can call on for any help I need. I was also given extra time in my exams and the use of a computer as I struggle with writing. All my lecturers know I’m dyslexic and they work hard to help me. They have all been amazing,” said Siobhan.

Siobhan has also had the chance to work as a Student Ambassador, assisting the University’s Recruitment team with running open days and other recruitment events, which has boosted her confidence.

“After my degree I hope to stay on at the University to do my Master’s in Forensic Analysis followed by a PhD.”

As well as her role as a Student Ambassador, Siobhan has been able to carry out work experience in the University’s science labs and work as an Outreach Associate, visiting local schools and colleges to advise children and young people about the opportunities available through Higher Education.

Siobhan’s advice for anyone considering university is: “I’m still here, if I can do, anyone can. You can access all the help and support you need so just go for it.”
