University of Bedfordshire students were recently paid a visit by Nila Aalia of Casualty and Hollyoaks.

Forming the latest session of the University’s Media Performance Masterclasses series, Nila, an actress, director and acting coach for some 25 years, passed on her advice to first and second year Media Performance students.

Held at Bedfordshire’s Luton campus over two days, Nila delivered a number of practical workshops using Synapsing, an innovative learning and performance process that connects performers to their core creativity.

“Whilst I really enjoy training adults, it is wonderful to have the chance to train the next generation of performers here at the University of Bedfordshire,” said Nila, whose career has taken her to Germany, India and America.

“The students are at a place where they are right at the beginning of their careers and are still to decide whether they want to be script writers, directors or actors.

“Using Synapsing, I have been able to highlight the importance of adopting a creative mindset, because despite being under pressure to deliver once one begins to work in the profession, the best work is produced when you are at your most creative.”

In addition to her TV appearances, including dramas Spooks and A Touch of Frost, Nila has also enjoyed a career in the West End, starring in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of Bombay Dreams.

Rachel Clark, Media Performance Course Leader at Bedfordshire, added: “Masterclasses are embedded into our courses to provide our students with guidance and advice from professionals working within the performance industries.

“Nila is a successful working actress, director and acting coach and shares her experience with the students showing them how to approach a script for camera and stage, as an actor, director, or writer. The class is a valuable experience.”

Previous Masterclass guests include CBeebies presenter Gemma Hunt and Eastenders director Jamie Annett
