University of Bedfordshire Sports Studies student Christopher Cordara-Soanes has received a prestigious accolade at Luton’s African Caribbean Achievers Awards ceremony.

Having competed for the Antiguan national men’s football team in the Caribbean Games, Christopher received recognition for outstanding academic achievement and sporting excellence in front of an impressive 400 guests.

After being presented with his award by Dr Gordon Mellor, Campus Director University Campus Milton Keynes, Chris commented "I was truly overwhelmed by the amount of people that came together to celebrate the achievements of young African-Caribbean students.”

The awards are a community partnership in which the University has been proactively involved in for almost a decade. The key aim of the initiative is to recognise and celebrate the achievements of young people of African-Caribbean heritage from the local area, showcasing outstanding academic, artistic and sporting talent.

The awards ceremony was a resounding success partially thanks to the contribution made by MBA Business Administration student Kiran Javraj.

As part of the University’s internship programme, Kiran helped to organise the event. She commented: “This internship gave me an opportunity to participate in real-time event management and allowed me to work with skilled personnel from Luton Borough Council.”

Trevor Sinclair, Access and Outreach Manager for Academic Partnerships at the University and an active member of the Achievers Awards organising committee said: “It is important for the University to support the local community to encourage young people to take advantage of educational opportunities.

“Working collaboratively with our community can help to create better life chances for our own students so that they can develop the skills graduate employers are looking for”.
