A University of Bedfordshire student has been announced as runner-up in Radio Aire’s ‘Your Big Chance’ competition.

Luke Gregory, a BA (Hons) Media Production (Radio) student won the accolade, beating hundreds of entries to the runner-up position.

Commenting on his experience in the competition, Luke said: “Finishing runner-up has really inspired me to push on and be the best radio presenter I can. It was a great experience and a great way to make new contacts within the radio industry which is vital when you are looking for employed work.”

Bauer Media, who owns Radio Aire as part of its City 1 network of stations, held the competition with first prize winning the enviable Friday evening slot from 10pm-1am across its three stations in Yorkshire; Radio Aire, Hallam FM and Viking FM.

Bauer asked listeners to submit a 30 second video that would tell viewers all about themselves.

Luke received the call saying he had made it to the final 12 and got the chance to head up to Leeds to record a series of ‘links’ – short clips talking on the radio in between songs – at their studio.

The final 12 were then asked to complete two tasks; first to create a link about a recent showbiz story and then one about a latest track, at Radio Aire’s studios.

Luke was once again a winner when he received a call asking him back to answer questions at the First Direct Arena in Leeds. He had made it to the final six.

Luke is a student manager at Radio LaB 97.1FM, a community radio station that broadcasts throughout Luton and Bedfordshire from the University of Bedfordshire’s Luton campus centre.

Radio LaB Coordinator Terry Lee said: “Not everybody who gets involved in Radio LaB aspires to be a radio professional, but for those who do we will support them all the way, offering them advice and giving them the best possible radio equipment to learn their craft.”

He continued: “Luke is a very talented, determined individual. I’m delighted he’s a part of the Radio LaB team this year and I’m proud of his achievements in the ‘Your Big Chance’ competition."
