The University of Bedfordshire’s student-led radio station has once again been nominated for ‘Community Project of the Year’ at the Love Luton awards.

Radio LaB, which broadcasts on 97.1fm, is a full-time Ofcom licensed community radio station. Since being nominated last year, the student crew at Radio LaB have worked on a number of community projects with various partners including Uprising, Luton Borough Council, Age Concern Luton and HOH Studios.

Radio LaB aims to use radio as a tool to engage with communities, promote events, improve peoples’ confidence and communication skills.

The hard work and dedication by young people to the shows broadcast has paid off, with a recent survey by an independent organisation revealing that Radio LaB is listened to by nearly 6,000 young (aged under 30) Lutonians every week.

Radio LaB Coordinator Terry Lee commented: “Being shortlisted for this award is a fantastic reward to all the young people and students involved in Radio LaB. Being a part of this prestigious awards ceremony gives us a chance to promote more of the opportunities the station offers, helping Radio LaB to make a bigger difference.

"Radio LaB is not just about broadcasting a great noise. It’s about creating cohesive communities, sharing stories and giving a voice to those who don’t feel represented by mainstream media – be that volunteers or guests.

"One of our aims is that our volunteers learn transferable skills in media and communication and ultimately become more confident, employable and aware of what is happening in their town."

Radio LaB will be joined by the Families United Network and Uniform Exchange Programme in their category with the awards ceremony due to take place on Friday December 2. For more information go to: www.loveluton.org.uk/categories
