A sports student has spoken about how a Clearing open day helped to cement her decision to study at the University of Bedfordshire after not getting the A Level results she was expecting.

Up until early October, prospective students can use Clearing to find a last-minute place at university, whether they’ve just received their exam results or for another reason.

Sport & Exercise Science student, Cleo, applied to study via the Clearing process after attending an open day and is now about to start her 2nd year – and she is also the co-host of the University’s Clearing special of the Bits of Beds podcast.

Hi, my name is Cleo Morris and I’m 19 years old from London. I am currently going into my second year of studying Sport & Exercise Science here at the University’s Bedford campus.

Upon receiving my A Level results I was offered my insurance choice, however I decided I wasn’t happy with the course offered at that particular university or its location. So I had to go through Clearing and secured a place at the University of Bedfordshire.

On results day, I had to go through UCAS and the Clearing process, which matched me to a few universities and I also did my own research directly through university websites. I then called up the Clearing hotline of each university of interest, finding any opportunities such as open days or tours. And eventually I came to the University of Bedfordshire for a visit and decided to accept the offer after seeing the facilities and campus.

I would say the support I have received here has been amazing as starting in a new learning environment while being away from home has had its challenges, but I’ve been able to overcome them with support from lecturers and my academic tutor. The Student Information Desk has also been a great resource which has supported me with any academic issues.

In terms of my experience, with the help of a maintenance loan and part-time work, I have been able to manage through the crisis thankfully. My top tips for other students and potential students would be to definitely consider having a part-time job while at university as well as budgeting for things such as food shopping, eating out, rent and travel – try to make savings where you can.

Get involved in as much as you can – from societies to sports teams to events. This will help you meet new people on different courses and network with other students. In terms of making the most out of the university experience, my top tip would be to have a balance between university work, studying and having fun.

I would say look through your course modules and look at any extra qualifications you can gain while completing your undergraduate degree to make sure it’s right for you. And don’t hesitate to visit the university on open days to get a feel for the campus and ask other students and lecturers any questions.
