Celebrations are in order at Radio LaB – the University of Bedfordshire’s community radio station – as the station has been nominated for another coveted award, this time at the Student Radio Awards (SRAs).

The nomination for Best Sports Programming is in recognition of the team’s 9-hour broadcast keeping listeners up to date with the Varsity 2023 competition, which was hosted at the University’s Bedford campus. It comes just weeks after the station received two nods at the Community Radio Awards.

Final-year Radio & Audio student and current Radio LaB station manager, Nataya Woolnough, said: “It is amazing to be shortlisted for the Student Radio Awards. All of the Radio LaB team worked incredibly hard to make sure that our Varsity coverage was the best it could be and this shows that our hard work has paid off. We focused on the quality of our production, using skills we’ve been learning to create a great listening experience for everyone trying to follow the event in Luton.”

The Radio LaB team are no strangers to recognition at the SRAs, with numerous students and alumni being nominated for their work over the years. Last year, the SRA Chart Show programme picked up Silver in the ‘Best Chart Show Programming’ category.

Speaking about this year’s nomination, Terry Lee – Senior Tutor in Radio & Audio and co-ordinator of Radio LaB – added: “The big challenge for the students for this Varsity coverage was that, despite Bedfordshire being the home team, Radio LaB had to broadcast away from our usual campus! This ‘away-day’ atmosphere did add to the upbeat feel of the broadcast. I was really proud of the work of the students on the day, and I’m so pleased the SRA has recognised the students in this nomination.”

Looking to add to their impressive trophy cabinet, Radio LaB were nominated earlier this month for two Community Radio Awards, also in recognition of their Varsity programming.

The Student Radio Awards 2023 will take place in London on 14th November. Follow @SRA on X for all the winners and updates on the night.
