A Screen Performance graduate from the University of Bedfordshire has been cast in the new series of ITV drama ‘Grantchester’.

Dean Weir, who graduated from the MA Screen Performance & Communication Techniques course in 2019, appears in the eighth series of the popular show – which focuses on a clergyman investigating a series of dark crimes in a sleepy village – as John Mitchell, a young man who lands himself in unfortunate circumstances.

Speaking about his ‘Grantchester’ role and sharing advice for students, Dean said: “I had an in-person audition at the ‘Grantchester’ production office. I got a phone call from my agent, who asked me to attend the following day and only a short time after I found out I had the role!

“After you finish your degree, knowing what to do next can be daunting. You can feel lost after spending time in the comfort of your university bubble. Get yourself out there, try to be seen by as many people as possible, and make connections. Everyone will embark on their unique journey and will have many stories to tell down the line – just like me!”

Dean, who is based in Bedford, has over a decade of experience working in the film and television industry. He has previously appeared in background roles in a number of blockbuster hits including Queen biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, and thriller ‘Mission Impossible: Fallout’.

Dr Maria Weiner, Course Coordinator for the MA Screen Performance & Communication Techniques, added: “Dean always was a focused, diligent, resilient and ambitious student. His skills and determination to advance formed a strong base for his future career success. We are immensely happy to see him progress and very proud of his achievements. He forms a role model for our students at the University and we are all looking forward to seeing his future accomplishments.”

You can watch ‘Grantchester’ on Thursdays on ITV1 at 9pm or catch up on ITVX.
