This is a festival for everyone. Whether you want to learn something new or showcase your heritage – everyone in our university community can be involved.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Alexandra, I’m 34 years old and from Romania. I decided to move to England in 2012, and in 2021, I was lucky to be able to study at the University of Bedfordshire.

Do you think it is important for us to celebrate culture?

Celebrating other students' cultures is very important for understanding, respecting and being close to all the people from different parts of the world. Learning, appreciating diversity, and building a great community is a great opportunity. Studying abroad can be difficult and understanding each other and celebrating the international culture makes me feel connected to a global community and excited to share and learn from others. I love to meet new people and learn about their culture and traditions.

What is something that you love to celebrate in your culture?

In my culture, I love to celebrate ‘Dragobetele’, a celebration of love and spring, which takes place every year on February 24, followed by ‘Mărţişor’, a festival that marks the beginning of spring and takes place on March 1. On this day, Romanians give each other ‘mărţişoare’, small objects made of red and white threads, which symbolize the purity and energy of life.

How would you like others to celebrate your community with you?

I would like to encourage others to participate in Romanian cultural events, try traditional food and join in on different celebrations.

As an international student, how has your experience at University?

The University has helped me by offering me the opportunity to study a foundation year which was amazing, I learned a lot of new things and improved my English.
